As we saw in a previous post the waterproofing of the roofs (specifically flat roofs or terraces) can be of many types .
At Today’s article will explain how we perform waterproofing correctly with bituminous sheets. We will explain two types:
- Self-protected bilayer, for roofs not passable
- Bilayer with heavy protection and tile finish
As we said, the best known sheets are those painted with rubber armed with fiber veils glass, polyurea paints and asphalt sheets and EPDM. In this article we describe a work that we made using EPDM fabric.
It agrees clarify that basically we will use two types of sheet in terms of their chemical composition: elastomeric SBS and APP plastomers. Both sheets are LBM sheets, that is, sheets of modified bitumen. Plastomers have poorer elastic performance (for they are called plastic) but they resist more heat, we will only use them when they have to be protected, for auxiliary uses that do not have many benefits.
Be how i know the type of roof chosen, it is very important to know that the asphalt sheets are affected by direct exposure to the elements and above all suffer the accentuated thermal changes that occur on rooftops. These blades have less elasticity than sheets EPDM and they tend to have symptoms of fatigue earlier: for this reason it is necessary to protect them from direct exposure to the sun and rain, reinforce them in the corners and singular points (this will lead us to always make bends of sheet and overlaps, also to build half rods to smooth edges and their consequent mechanical stresses)
Self-protected cover no passable
Specifications
It will be a two-layer waterproofing cover adhered to the support, with a previous bituminous primer. The waterproofing will be formed by two elastomeric sheets of 30 kg / m2 lower and 40 kg / m2 the upper one, in addition to improving their mechanical resistance, the sheets will be reinforced with fiberglass veil (FV). Since this system does not have a final layer of flooring, protection against inclement weather will be provided by the mineral particles that cover the last waterproofing layer.
Applications
This type of roof is used in cases where access and transit through the terrace will be very restricted , let’s say that they will only be accessible for maintenance work.
In this case, it is advisable to use the elastomeric sheet system since they will normally be exposed to high thermal movements.
Passable roof for private use
Specifications
Exactly we will use a two-layer waterproofing system adhered to the support after a bituminous primer. The waterproofing will be made up of two plastomeric sheets of 30 kg / m2 lower and 40 kg / m2 upper. Before laying the flooring plank, it is essential to place a geotextile sheet that will act as a separator with the mortar, since it will expand independently due to the thermal changes of the terrace and if they were not separated, the sheet could tear.
Applications
This type of roofs are the typical terraces of a multi-family building, indicated to be passable by people and to put tables and chairs , they will not have large movements since they are not large roof panels, they are not highly exposed to mechanical stresses due to movement and end up protected by thermal insulation and the ironing and final finish.
